Role Description
Distribution Planner, Co-op [Eng.]
Jan 2025 - Dec 2025
As a distribution planner, I focused on the analysis and design of power distribution systems using CYME modeling and simulation software. My day-to-day work involved the evaluation of new customer and system project proposals to determine how well they integrated into the existing network infrastructure. Using expeditor/contractor design drawings, I modeled new projects in CYME and performed various simulations on the project models. Based on simulation results, I recommended scope items which would allow projects to move forward without compromising system reliability or performance.
Some of my key responsibilities:
Analyzed and interpreted electrical system data to support accurate distribution modeling and planning decisions.
Diagnosed system problems and developed technical reports that outline appropriate solutions
Sized customer transformers based on various metrics such as operating load, service entrance amperage and motor start
Performed TCC and fault analyses to recommend reliable protection additions/changes
Designed settings for various recloser models, regulators, diamondback switches, and substation relays
Drafted project SLDs using AutoCAD 2D modeling
Equipment that I modeled, configured and researched:
Major Projects
Asset Mod/SCADA Projects
I was the lead planner for 4 large grid modernization projects; these regional projects aimed to replace select protection/switching devices with SCADA-enabled versions and to retrofit eligible devices with SCADA-capable controllers. These projects required me to collaborate with multiple engineering groups within the company. I performed TCC analysis to develop settings for over 100 in-scope recloser devices, and proposed additional protection changes to ensure branch device coordination. I also drafted the project SLDs and provided support for Diamondback settings, load transfers and other switching ops.
REA Studies
I produced a system-wide technical report for 2 rural electrification associations (REAs) in my service area. The purpose of these studies was to identify potential limitations of the REA-owned networks and develop an inventory of system improvements to be carried out in following years. My reports assessed voltage levels, loading levels and protection for the existing and future systems, based on model data and forecasted growth (10 year). After my analysis, I developed scopes of system improvements and protection changes to optimize REA systems, as well as ballpark estimates and electrical drawings for my proposals.
